Legend of Si Pitung folklore of Jakarta
Si Pitung is a legendary figure and hero in the Betawi community in Jakarta. He is believed to be a pious and humble superior fighter. With his expertise, he defended the small people in the Jakarta area who were oppressed by the Dutch colonization. He robbed those who had become rich as accomplices to the Dutch, then distributed the spoils to the common people. He is also known as the"Robin Hood of Betawi".
Until now, Betawi people believe that SI Pitung did exist, fought, and after his death was buried in Marunda, North Jakarta. Here is the story of the legendary fighter.
***
One afternoon, Mr. Piun was sitting in front of his house. He worked all day in the fields, and that afternoon he wanted to unwind with his family. Mrs. Pinah, his wife, sat in the bamboo halls holding her bulging belly. In a few days, the baby will give birth. Mr. Piun smiled happily, while muttering a prayer, hopefully the child who was born will be a useful child.
Suddenly one of the three children sitting near Mrs. Pinah asked Mr. Piun.
(..Sir, why is the rice that has just been harvested taken away by hiteng-hiteng Babah Liem?..)
Mr. Piun was silent for a moment, then answered slowly.
(..Let It Go, Son. Besides, we still have rice...)
Actually, Pak Piun's heart is absurdly sad. He was worried because the rice that had just been harvested was suddenly seized by hiteng-hiteng Babah. However, in that area, commoners like him could not resist the dispossession.
Kampung Rawabelong, his village, is part of the Kebayoran particle. The ruling landlord there was Liem Tjeng Soen. The particle land was obtained from the Dutch government through the purchase of land documents, as well as the willingness to pay taxes to the Dutch.
To guard the land, Babah Liem raised centeng-centeng from among the natives. They are in charge of collecting taxes on the population. The residents did not dare to fight hiteng-hiteng who was good at Silat and adept at playing the weapon. So, they just fell silent when hiteng-hiteng took chickens, goats, rice, and anything that can be brought.
A few days later, Miss Pinah gave birth. Pak Piun named the newborn child Pitung, and called him si Pitung. Like most Betawi children, Pitung grew up in his own family. He was taught manners, learned the Koran, helped his father grow rice, pick coconuts, and find grass to feed the goats. Sometimes Pitung helps his neighbors without being asked.
Pitung was diligent in fulfilling the commandments of God, prayer and fasting, and always spoke politely and obedient to his parents.
Pitung learned religious knowledge and silat and other martial arts from Haji Naipin, a respected cleric in Kampung Rawabelong. Because Pitung was obedient and diligent in training, he became a favorite student of Haji Naipin. To him all the knowledge of Hajj Naipin poured, with the hope that later he became a useful student for the community. Haji Naipin even gave Pancasona knowledge, a science of invulnerability of weapons, to Pitung. Haji Naipin Said, (..This is to protect the weak from evil, not to oppress the weak..)
Despite being a favorite student of Haji Naipin, Pitung was always humble. To others he is always polite and praiseworthy. He also did not escape the turmoil of youth. He is in a relationship with Aisha, and promises to marry her when they are of marriageable age.
One day, Pitung witnessed the arbitrariness of hiteng Babah Liem. The hitchhiker came to his neighbor's House and took away chickens, goats, coconuts, and rice deposits in the barn. As a young man, his blood boiled. He wants to beat them.
However, his mother prevented Pitung.
(..No, Tung. They have power. They will get their own punishment..)
Because he wanted to obey his mother's advice, Pitung canceled his intention to beat the Hitmen. However, on another day, when he was visiting in a neighboring village, he saw again the hitmen acting arbitrarily.
Seven couldn't resist anymore. He was surrounded by hitmen who were busy robbing the poor family's belongings.
(..Hey, cowards!..) exclaimed seven. (..Why do you steal other people's property? Use the gang again. Alone if you dare!..)
The centeng leader turned to Pitung and smiled condescendingly.
(...You don't know who we are, Do you? No wonder you dare yell like that..)
(..Dude!..) Pitung spat furiously. (..You only dare gang up on the weak. Here, if you dare to fight against me..)
The Hitman leader became furious. He attacked Pitung casually, thinking that Pitung would be easily knocked down. However, unexpectedly, Pitung instead blocked his arm and slammed it to the ground until he fainted. The other hitmen stopped their activities and surrounded Pitung. With alacrity Pitung attack first. There were five hitmen who ganged up on him. One by one he beat their temples or shins until they complained of pain. Then they took the leader of hiteng who was still unconscious and fled.
Before leaving, they threaten: (..Watch out, we'll report the Demang..)
A few days after the event, the name Pitung became a byword throughout Kebayoran. Seven, however, did not budge. He even avoided if someone asked him about the incident.
One day, Pak Piun told Pitung to sell goats to Tanah Abang Market. Mr. Piun is in need of money to meet the needs of the family. Pitung took out two goats from the cage and headed to Tanah Abang Market. Unbeknownst to him, there was a hitman following him. The Hitman kept an eye on Pitung when Pitung pocketed the money from the sale of goats. Even when Pitung walked home and stopped at a mosque, the man still followed him. When Pitung took off his clothes to bathe in the river and perform ablution, the man stole money in Pitung's pocket.
Pitung got home and scolded his father because the money was gone. Furious, he returned to Tanah Abang Market and searched for the person who had stolen the money. After an investigation, he found the man. The guy was hanging out with other hitmen in a coffee shop.
Seven came to him and rebuked, (..Give me my money back!..)
The Hitmen laughed.
One of them said,)..You can take this money, but you have to be a member..)
(..Cuh! I don't want to be a thief..) answer Pitung harshly.
The Hitmen were angry to hear Pitung's answer. They threw pitches. However, what they face is SI Pitung from Kampung Rawabelong who once beat six hitmen Babah Liem alone. As a result, one by one they hit the Pitung fist. Those who dared to use weapons were even devoured by their own.
From that day on, the Pitung decided to defend the weak. He could no longer bear to see the suffering of the common people, who were oppressed by the landlords and sucked by the Dutch colonialists. Some of the hitmen he had beaten were insightful and he invited them to form a group. Together with his group, he robbed the Houses of the rich and distributed his booty to the poor and weak.
The name Pitung became fragrant among the common people. However, at the same time, other groups also appeared who took part in robbing in the name of Si Pitung. The landlords and those who took advantage by way of favoring the Dutch became unsettled. They complained to the Dutch government.
The colonial ruler in Batavia also ordered his officers to arrest Si Pitung. Schout Heyne, Kebayoran's controller, ordered the police orderlies and bek to find out where Pitung was. Schout Heyne promises big money to anyone who will tell the whereabouts of the Pitung
Knowing himself to be a fugitive, Pitung moved around, even once to Marunda. During that time, he continued to carry out the confiscation of the property of the rich, the demang and the landlord. He always gave to the poor and oppressed.
However, one day, Pitung and his group are trapped by a police plot. At that time they will rob the House of a demang. The police were already hiding around the House. When Pitung's group arrived, the police immediately surrounded the House. Pitung lets himself be caught, while his friends manage to escape. He was taken to Grogol prison and held captive there.
However, because he was always thinking about the fate of the people, he escaped through the roof tiles one night. The guards panicked about it.
(...Well, what about this? Where's seven..) ask them to Pitung's cellmates.
(..I don't know. There are seven sacred. He can disappear,) replied cellmate Pitung.
The news that Pitung escaped made the controller and the rich people become unsettled again. Schout Heyne ordered men to arrest Pak Piun and Haji Naipin. The two men were tortured to tell him where the Pitung was. However, both are silent. As a result, they were both imprisoned in Grogol.
Meanwhile, Pitung continues to carry out its activities. However, he became thoughtful when he heard the news that his father and teacher were locked up by the police. He sent a message that he was willing to surrender if the two men were released. Schout Heyne agreed.
