The History of Mount Kawi

Gunung Kawi is a temple complex located in Tampaksiring Village, Gianyar, Bali. The temple complex consists of ten temples built in the 11th century AD. These temples were built during the reign of the Balinese king at that time, Anak Wungsu.

According to legend, Gunung Kawi was built by king Anak Wungsu as a tribute to his father, Udayana, and his predecessors. The name Gunung Kawi itself is said to come from the name of a king who ruled in the 11th century, Kakiwulan.

Despite the popularity of the legend, there are no official historical records to confirm its veracity. Therefore, it is not known exactly who built this temple complex and for what purpose.

Nevertheless, Gunung Kawi is still one of the famous historical sites in Bali and attracts tourists from all over the world. Apart from offering the beauty of the temple architecture, this place also has stunning natural beauty.

In addition to the legend and architectural beauty of the temple, Gunung Kawi also has an important historical value. In this temple complex, there are several reliefs depicting scenes from ancient times, such as agriculture, trade, and the life of Balinese people at that time.

In addition, there are also several tombs that are believed to be the tombs of Balinese kings in the past. This shows how important Gunung Kawi was as a sacred place and religious center in the past.

The Gunung Kawi temple complex is also unique in its construction. The temples are built into cliffs and hill walls, giving a special impression to visitors.

Although Gunung Kawi is quite old, the temple complex is still in good condition. This is thanks to the efforts of those responsible for maintaining and preserving the temple complex.

As a historical tourist destination, Gunung Kawi is an interesting place to visit. Besides presenting the beauty of the temple architecture, this place also holds important historical and cultural values for the Balinese people.
